Volume 4, Training Week 3: "When & Where"
"We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation."
Romans 5:3-4 (NLT)

My body is getting into a groove. Working on making everyday a habit. I'm getting up everyday at 4:45AM to get my morning workout in. That's when I know I can get half of the day done, and I do my best to get the second session in before dinner so I can be sure I put the priority on what is on the family and personal calendar. I am tired, but not nearly what I was on the first week. My workout sessions are alternating which part of my body I'm working, so I'm not really doing two things that focus on just my legs, for instance. The variety helps with soreness as I am able to rest certain muscles but at the same time still getting them moving. A big fear in the next year is some type of injury. So I'm doing what I can to prevent that.
"ERROR!" Are you kidding me? My heart missed a beat as I realized I had put in the wrong expiration date on my credit card. So I adjusted that, and didn't hesitate this time around. And BOOM, I'm in! No going back now. Registering is the first step. Now training, getting to the starting line, and then hitting the red carpet under the arch as I cross the finish line. But this is my A-race for next year. I have 5 other events before that November 1st date. Here is my 2025 event schedule:
May 18-- Kansas City Triathlon. This will be an Olympic distance (1500 meter swim, 25- mile bike, and a 10K run) at Longview Lake, MO (local).
June 8-- Ironman 70.3 Eagleman (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and 13.1 mile run) in Cambridge, MD. This is the week after Matthew and Macey get married in Delaware. This has been a bucket list race on my radar for a long time as Julie and I used to live just over an hour from there when we first got married.
July 13-- Shawnee Mission Triathlon. This is another Olympic distance in Shawnee Mission Lake (local).
Aug 9-- Kill Creek Triathlon at Kill Creek Park here locally. This will be a sprint race (500 meter swim, 10.5 mile bike, and a 5k run).
Sep 20-- Lake Olathe Triathlon. This will be another sprint race right here in my hometown. This is the one that was cancelled on me a couple of months ago due to weather. Hope to get this one in next year!
Nov 1-- IRONMAN FLORDA!!! Panama City Beach, FL. 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, and 26.2-mile run.
So there it is in all its glory. I invite all of you to come to any (or all) of these. The door is open, let me know and I'll send you details on coming out. It's free to spectate and cheer me on.
Lessons Learned:
This week in my devotional, I was reminded that although I might love the training--the swimming, running, and biking, as well as all the things that surround those disciplines--there will be days I don't love it. It will be hard to get out of bed and get motivated. So I have to win the battle in my mind and heart to do what I know will benefit me as I train. Likewise, in my walk with Christ, I love the "training"--my daily devotional, my Bible Study on Thursdays as we read through the Bible, Sunday mornings at church in both the service and our Sunday School class, and leading the safety team at church--but there are times where I won't feel like doing it, or have a mindset of "it's just another thing on my to-do list". It's not the overt activity that defines my training in either triathlon or my Christian life. It often is what my mind and heart are saying. And that must win over what I may not want to do at that time. Knowing that following Christ and always learning more to live into what Christ created me to be and do will benefit me in ways I can't even yet imagine. If I miss workout or miss a moment to connect with the Lord, it won't kill the entire process. But one day can lead to two. And two can lead to three, and before I know it, the habit I've built will no longer be a habit. So I need to be disciplined. And go through the hard time which will build endurance and that endurance will lead to character. I can learn from that in both my physical and spiritual training. The pic at the beginning of blog is right. The first step is the hardest. After something becomes a habit, I won't feel good unless I stay active.
So there it is. Volume 4 done. Thanks for cheering me on maybe just by sticking with this sometimes rambling blog. But I am serious about coming out and watching me race. The invitation stands.
11 months, 1 week, 9 hours, 47 minutes until the gun goes off.
